About Jonathan Stewart

Jonathan Stewart

Jonathan Stewart was an alumnus of Campion College (Class of 1983) who passed away in a tragic accident some 20 years ago. His love for reading and the outdoors was well-known amongst his beloved friends, many of whom also attended Campion. He will always be remembered by his family, friends and associates as a remarkable human being.

The Hon. Gordon “Butch” Stewart OJ Challenge Grant

In 2009, the Vision 2020 Campaign received a once-in-a-generation opportunity in the form of a challenge grant from Campion Hall alumnus, the Hon. Gordon “Butch” Stewart, OJ, and his family.

The Stewarts are donating US$350,000 towards the construction of Jamaica’s first modern library media centre at Campion in honour of Mr. Stewart’s late son, Jonathan Stewart, while alumni, parents and friends of the school have raised over US$700,000.

Construction costs for the library have been budgeted at US$700,000 and therefore the balance of the funds raised will go towards other urgent projects at the school (click here to see the list).

The Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new library was held on June 29, 2011 and construction is expected to be complete in late 2012. Click here to read about this historic event.

The Jonathan Stewart Library

As Jamaica’s first modern library media centre, the Jonathan Stewart Library will feature several different computer-accessible and internet-enabled areas for students to do research, independent study as well as to complete assignments and projects needed for external examinations. The centre will also have a cadre of laptop computers as well as projectors and other presentation tools for students and teachers. Other features include:

  • A distance learning and interactive technology classroom
  • A multi-media classroom
  • Small-group study and meeting rooms for collaborative learning
  • An outside amphitheatre for creative arts performances and student meetings

The Library is being designed by alum Architect Bruce F. Lopez A.I.A., Synergy Design Studio Inc., in collaboration with Architect Louis N. Girvan R.A., Girvan & Associates Limited. Project managers are Neustone Ltd and structural engineers are Peter Jervis & Associates.
